Preserving Local Heritage

The Lower Wye Valley is famous for Tintern Abbey and for the great Romantic artists and poets who have been inspired by it - Wordsworth, Gilpin, Turner and Tennyson. There is, however, much of historic interest around the abbey including ancient industrial sites, Bronze-Age cairns, churches, fords, holloways, Iron-Age forts and slipways.

The Lower Wye Valley Building Preservation Trust (LWVBPT) was established in 2014 by enthusiasts keen to preserve and promote this valuable heritage. It is a volunteer-run membership charity (no. 1163179) and company (limited by guarantee - no. 09208574). We have an elected committee that meets six times a year. Group members are welcome to stand for election and vacancies are advertised a month before the annual AGM.

Projects

The consolidation and reopening of St Mary’s, Tintern.
This listed building and scheduled monument has been on the ‘at risk’ register since 1977 and we are working to make the structure safe so it can be re-opened to the public. Due to safety concerns, the ruin is currently closed and unauthorized access is strictly forbidden.

Restoring Fryer’s Wharf Slipway, Tintern.
For centuries, Tintern thrived as a bustling river village and Fryer’s Wharf was gifted to the community in 1910. We are lobbying Welsh Water to replace their technology so we can restore what is an ancient slipway, the last road-side slipway in Tintern, for public use.
