Volunteer

“I volunteer each month throughout Monmouthshire and nowhere is as lovely as St Mary’s.” Mike Davies, WVNLVolunteer

You are welcom to join our team of enthusiastic volunteers helping to restore St Mary’s, Fryer’s Wharf Slipway and participate in water testing sessions.

You can dip in and out of volunteering as you wish. No professional background is needed - just a willingness to lend a hand! We would be delighted to hear from pupils if you would like to participate as part of your Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Expert Support: Skilled supervision and advice are provided and our team leaders are very experienced in managing grounds for wildlife diversity and abundance.

Great Partnerships: some volunteer sessions will be working alongside Wye Valley National Landscapes or Gwent Wildlife Trust. Our sessions are held with the permission of either the Wye Valley Community Council or the Church in Wales.

St Mary’s

Hands-On Care: There are monthly sessions most Saturdays 10.30-12.30 - generally the second of the month for those that wish to combine an outing to the Tintern Village Hall Market.

LWVBPT control structural work on St Mary’s, with some specialised tasks handled by professionals.

Churchyard work is in partnership with the owners, the Church in Wales and there are also annual volunteer sessions hosted with Wye Valley National Landscapes and Gwent Wildlife Trust.

We use organic methods and volunteers use hand tools - there will be spare tools if you do not possess equipment. Expect to learn coppicing and dry-walling, appreciate the gorgeous views and have some fun identifying the diverse flora and fauna that live in and visit this enchanting wildlife site.

Fryer’s Wharf

Hands-On Care: work to clear the front of the slipway (keeping back infill in place) will take place once a year in partnership with Wye Valley National Landscapes and Wye Valley Community Council. Tools and refreshments will be provided.

Water testing: we actively monitor Tintern’s sewage output and water quality with weekly testing. This will provide evidence to Welsh Water that there is a need to upgrade their 1960’s equipment and remove the pumping station from the ancient slipway.

Testing is done in collaboration with Eyes on the Wye and with thanks to the Wye Salmon Association who have supplied testing kits.
